Melanotan II is a synthetic peptide of seven amino acids, derived from α-MSH: a hormone the body produces itself, from the melanocortin family. It is built from the fragment covering amino acids four to ten of that hormone, with an acetylated start, an amidated end and a ring closure between two of the amino acids.
Research into Melanotan II concerns the melanocortin receptors. The literature describes the compound as an agonist of the melanocortin-1 receptor on melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment, and studies that property in connection with the formation of eumelanin.
