Epithalon is a tetrapeptide of four amino acids, with the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly. In the literature you will also come across it as Epitalon, Epithalamin or AEDG peptide.
The peptide is derived from a substance found in the pineal gland, a small gland in the brain involved in the day and night rhythm. Research into Epithalon focuses mainly on the ageing of cells and on telomeres: the ends of chromosomes that grow shorter with every cell division. That makes it one of the established names in longevity research.
Other peptides found in this field are MOTS-c, which is encoded in the DNA of the mitochondria, and NAD+. SS-31 also comes from mitochondrial research; that peptide targets the inner membrane.
