P21, also written as P021, is modelled on a small piece of CNTF: a growth factor the body produces itself for nerve cells. It concerns amino acids 148 to 151 of that growth factor. An adamantyl group has been attached to the molecule, a compact carbon structure that makes the peptide more stable.
Research into P21 covers the formation of new nerve cells and the areas of learning and memory. So far that research has been carried out entirely in animal models, including mouse models for Alzheimer’s disease. There are no studies in humans and the substance is not registered as a medicine anywhere.
